Les systèmes utilisant Common Desktop Environment (CDE) sont affectés via le serveur de base de données RPC ToolTalk. Un attaquant non authentifié disposant d'un accès réseau peut exécuter du code arbitraire sur le système cible en envoyant un argument spécialement conçu à une procédure spécifique. Cette attaque est facile à réaliser car elle ne nécessite aucune interaction de l'utilisateur ni d'identifiants préalables.
